3 First Steps to Enjoy Fall Camping:
Step 1. Choose your destination! Check out recreation.gov to find the perfect place for you! Whether you want to stay close or travel a little you’ll find a park that has what you’re looking for and many of these parks are part of a US conservations projects, providing even more oohs and aaahs to enjoy as you take in all that Nature has to offer us in the Fall.
Consider the after labor day reduced fees in many state and national parks and forests. Check the National Forest Service Website for exact information on the parks you are interested in. fs.fed.us
Step 2. Plan for colors! One of the most inviting reasons to camp in fall is of course the turning of the leaves and brilliant hues of fall foliage. Most of the US falls in an area that will have the privilege to experience some fall leaves turning, but if you aren’t so privileged and would like to find a place to camp that will provide this breathtaking experience…check out a coming post on the best places to camp and hike to experience the colors of fall. Historically September and October are the peak times to see Nature in all her colorful glory. But the temps can be unpredicatable at this time of year and cooler temps to take you by surprise. So, be prepared for rain or a chance snow.
Step 3. Make a Check list and carefully check off each item! When temps begin to drop the last thing you need is a a pair of mittens that were left on the kitchen counter at home!
Just a few of the items your list should include:
- Cold weather sleeping bag
- A sleeping pad to insulate your body from the cold ground!
- Hot water bottle to keep you warm in your sleeping bag
- Down booties
- A Good Tent. If you plan to camp in fall, an investment in a high quality- 3 season tent is a must. You want a rain fly to keep moisture out and of course…
- A tarp under your tent to prevent moisture from seeping in from the ground
- A mixture of clothing for layers, including thermal underwear, fleece, outerwear, mittens, winter cap, durable water proof hiking boots, extra shoes and socks, a rain poncho and plenty of changes of clothing just in case!
- A Tarp or two for various uses, hanging a tarp in the campsite area can act as an extra shelter and prevention against cold wind, it can serve as a shelter for eating areas in the case it rains.
