As a four-year-old growing up in the U.S., your daily routine may have looked something like this:
- wake up, eat breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed
- play at home or at a friend’s
- go to preschool or a lesson for a few hours
- eat a healthy lunch
- return home and continue to play
- play with your parents once they are off of work
- eat a healthy dinner
- go to bed at a reasonably early hour
Between the ages of one and five, you likely don’t recall the number of times you felt horribly sick, or wondered whether or not you would have the opportunity to go to school.
Yet, the average Cambodian four-year-old’s daily routine may look a little different.
Each year, 1 in 8 Cambodian children will die before his or her 8th birthday – often from preventable causes such as improper nutrition, disease, and poor sanitation.
Additionally, due to a lack of resources or long distances, many children never receive a proper education.
Fortunately, this is not a situation without hope! Organizations such as Asian Hope are working to combat these issues by dealing with them at their roots. Because they believe that education is prevention, Asian Hope is focusing their work on child, adult, and community education programs. Asian Hope is working to empower the poorest people in Cambodia to live longer, stronger, healthier, and mores sustainable lives.
