Why rent an inReach Explorer?

GPS units like the Explorer, as awesome as they are, don’t have regular use for most of us. Yes, it’s a great way to stay in touch when we are out in the field. But, how often is that? For most of us it’s once a year….or in a big year twice. So, if you buy an Explorer, you are in it for $379 in plus tax and possibly shipping. And then there are contract and usage charges that can easily run $200 to $600 a year. Buying could make sense, but for many, the best economic decision is to rent an Explorer when you need one.

How many bytes do I need?

Text Messages (average 80 bytes) – Messages send and received, with bytes dependent upon message length. Each character is equal to one byte, with a minimum message size of 16 bytes, not including recipients’ contact information. You are charged for both sent and received messages.

Preset Messages and Quick Texts (15 bytes) – Preset messages are short, commonly-used messages that are set up in your back office account and pre-loaded to your inReach ahead of time. Quick Tents are commonly used messages you want to send often instead of writing a custom reply.

Tracking Points (13 bytes) – Flexible tracking intervals ranging anywhere from 30 seconds to four hours to show worker or asset locations. Each standard track point is 13 bytes. Starting and stopping tracking consumes 15 bytes each. Every interval change consumes 17 bytes.

Location Pings with MapShare (25 bytes) – Enables you to see a worker or asset location if inReach is powered on but tracking is not activated.

Check messages (10 bytes) – Use “Check Messages” icon outside normal listening interval to check for pending incoming messages.

Do I need to buy additional data for my rental?

Well, that’s a good question. We give you 2000 bytes with every rental. So will that last? Maybe, maybe not. How much communicating do you want to do and do you want to use tracking? Both of those take data….well everything you do takes data so we give you reduced rates if you buy in advance. If you use more than what you purchase in advance, the additional  charges are $10 per 1000 bytes. So please, buy in advance because it costs so much more to be back billed for data usage.

While it took a little time to figure out it was a great tool for the location. Satellite service was generally great. The mapping program was excellent for staying on course on existing snow covered trails. The folks at Outdoors Geek were great to work with. Overall we felt it was worth the cost as extra insurance.

Amazing product and awesome service from Outdoors Geek

Product worked exactly as advertised and was a blessing to have with me during the hike. The app connection via Bluetooth to my phone was great.

Also had to push my hike a few days due to Mt Whitney closing due to COVID (I know, very confusing that an entire mountain closed but they did). I ended up hiking a near by mountain and had to change my dates and Outdoors Geek was very easy to work with and adjusted my dates free of charge. I would definitely rent from them again.

Highly recommend Garmin InReach AND Outdoors Geek!!!

We rented a Garmin InReach for our boat trip to Lake Powell. Luckily, we did not have to use it, but we did test it out. The ease of use and reliability were amazing! While the method of texting on the actual device seemed dated, the app that goes along with it made things so much easier.

Additionally, I had never used Outdoors Geek before, but they made everything extremely easy and really took the time to explain the device to me.

    I highly recommend both!

Product worked great on a backcountry trip in Idaho. Was able to keep my family updated the entire time and they were able to track my location. The unit was in solid condition and was easy to use. Arrived in the mail a day earlier than expected which worked out great. Will definitely recommend the InReach and Outdoors Geek to others.

    Non-techy using tech stuff

    Steve (verified owner)

I found the basic functions of the product easy enough to use with a few brief coaching calls to the staff at out door geek. The inreach had a lot more functions than I needed for an emergency back up. The manufacturers directions that were sent with it, though extensive, were vague in several areas that led to the phone calls. It would be nice if a shorter waterproof cheat sheet was made for this item. The Staff at outdoors geek were great and gave me all the support needed. I would definitely do business with them again

Great combo product & customer service. Had a couple of calls and emails with the support team and they helped me learn my way around the product. Worked great on our trip and made me want to buy one for future outings.

    Great Product

I rented the InReach explorer for a solo 21 day winter trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon and it more than met my needs. I was able to effectively communicate with family and friends that were tracking my progress and safety. It worked well and provided a peace of mind for all.

The staff at Outdoors Geek made the rental and setup process very smooth and they were very easy to work with. I have used other rental companies in the past and was searching for something better and more personal. Outdoors Geek rocks!!!

    Top Notch Product

    zackrozga (verified owner)

I Love Renting with Outdoors Geek!! The staff is always so helpful and supportive and renting this product was like all the rest, it was Top Notch! Based on my coordination with the team it came preconfigured with customized canned messages for quick texting to loved ones, already charged and overall ready to go! It couldn’t have been easier for me. It did everything I needed to do as expected but if it hadn’t there was a printed user manual for me to reference. Never needed it. 🙂 Thanks again, Outdoors Geek!
