Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the worlds premier backpacking and camping destinations. There are three ways to camp, and thousands of acres to explore. Here’s everything you need to know to go camping in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Camping gear rental packagesWith elevations from 7,869 feet to 14,259 feet, the Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the highest national parks in the nation. However, it’s not just the famous 14’ers that drive people to visit the park, but also the wide range of ecological zones allowing visitors to take in the world-renowned scenery. As you hike and explore the park, you’ll see the scenery change dramatically in just a short distance. The higher you go, the more incredible sights you’ll see.

Camping in High Elevation

If this is your first time camping in Rocky Mountain National Park, you’re in for a treat. You’re also in for a bit of a shock when you first experience higher altitudes. To avoid mountain sickness, it’s recommended that you allow yourself to get acclimated. Most hikes begin at 8,000 feet, which will have a noticeable impact on your body if you aren’t used to it. Spend a few days in one of the camps that are at the lowest level, and once you’ve gotten acclimated, start working your way up to the peaks.

Camping in Rocky Mountain National Park

In Rocky Mountain National Park there are three reservable campgrounds and two first-come-first-serve campgrounds. Reservable campgrounds can be reserved up to 6 months ahead of arrival, and they fill up fast. If you know you want to camp in Rocky Mountain National Park, reserve your spot now. If you want to try your luck and show up to get the first-come-first-serve campground, then be sure to get there early. Almost all campgrounds will fill up by early afternoon.

Wilderness Camping

The Rocky Mountain National Park is your park. Therefore, it is possible to camp outside of designated campsites for a more secluded adventure. For wilderness camping, you need to plan ahead and reserve your spot. You also need a wilderness permit. You can’t just hike until you’re tired and then pitch your tent without getting permission first. It’s for your own safety that rangers know where everyone is camping, especially out in the wilderness.

Packing for Rocky Mountain National Park

Because of the high elevations, you’ll want to pack layers as the temperature can drop significantly at night. Be sure to check what types of amenities are provided at the campground you’ve chosen. Some campgrounds are also secluded and will require you to walk to your site. If you have to walk, pack light so that you can carry all of your gear.
