California 14ers

The California 14ers are located in the mountain ranges of the Sierra Nevada, White Mountains, and the Cascade Range. California has 12 peaks that stand more than 14,000 ft above sea level. Furthermore, each peak has at least 300 ft of topographic prominence making these 14ers some of the most interesting to climb. Getting to the summit of any of these 14ers is quite a feat, and the hikes should not be taken lightly.

Hiking California 14ers

No matter which of the summits you wish to reach, hiking California 14ers will take you above the treelines into exposed areas, with some tough climbs and rough, jagged mountain edges. For the most experienced climbers, Mount Whitney is the highest peak in all of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mount Whitney has an elevation of 14,505 feet, with a climb of over 6,000 feet. However, there are plenty of other fourteeners with peaks that are more easily accessible. Be sure to research each climb before you head out. Give yourself plenty of time, and be sure to pack the right gear.

Essential Gear for Climbing 14ers

Before you go, make sure you understand the requirements, and if there is any specialized equipment needed. One thing we know for sure, you will need to bring a hydration system to keep you hydrated. Staying hydrated is key to reaching the summit, keeping a level head so you can maintain your balance and orientation. The higher you go, the more important it is to stay hydrated. As you get closer to each summit, the elevation takes a bigger and bigger toll on your body. Make sure you have plenty of water to get you to the top and back down again.
