Getting water while camping

Drinking water or a source of it, is one of the most important items on any hiking or camping trip. Our bodies need water for survival, especially when we are exerting ourselves in hot climates. For this reason, it is important always to bring water with you when you plan to spend time outdoors. The problem is that our bodies require a lot of it and water adds weight.

In general, the average person is supposed to drink between half an ounce to an ounce of water, per pound of body weight, per day… minimum! So if you weigh 150 pounds, you need between 75 and 150 ounces daily. When spending time outdoors in a hot climate, it will be closer to the higher end of that spectrum. So that means a 150-pound person would need between 2 and 4 liters of water a day minimum! Considering that water weighs 7.3 pounds per gallon, this can get heavy fast! The typical 3-liter backpack water bladder weighs roughly 6.5 pounds! While it doesn’t sound like much, it feels hefty on the back, especially when hiking.

So what should you do to stay hydrated while hiking or camping?

If you are camping, you could consider boiling water though this takes more time and effort… which isn’t ideal when you are thirsty. Don’t worry, at Outdoors Geek we have you covered. An easier alternative would be to bring one of our “Sawyer Mini Water Filter w/extra bags”. The “Sawyer Mini water filter” weighs only 2 oz. and performs like a super champion. It has a  warranty of 100,000 gallons! That’s a lot of filtered water for such a small compact device!

What makes it so effective is its hollow-fiber membrane that offers a high flow rate. You simply sip on the Mini like a straw, and it filters the water while it’s on the way to your mouth! It’s 0.1-micron filter physically removes 99.99999% of all bacteria, such as salmonella, cholera, and E.coli; as well as removes 99.9999% of all protozoa, such as giardia and cryptosporidium! It comes with a 16oz bag, but we have added a 32oz bag and 64oz bag for free!

Water is essential, especially when exploring the great outdoors, but it doesn’t have to stress you out or load you down! The next time you go hiking or camping, consider getting a “Sawyer Mini Water Filter w/extra bags” from Outdoors Geek. Once you use it, you’ll wonder how you ever went hiking or camping without it! Don’t forget, with Outdoors Geek, you can rent it, try it, buy it!
